Civil Rights banners on display at the Freeman Center

Jewish Life at Duke is hosting the Durham Civil Rights Heritage Project banners through Feb. 20.

This public art project depicts some of the rich history of the Civil Rights Movement in Durham through eleven 6' fabric banners incorporating photographs, text, and quotes from interviews with local people.

The African-American community has been a particularly vibrant part of Durham. From the neighborhood that was Hayti to the businesses on Parrish Street "Capital of the Black Middle Class," to the Durham blues, from the first African-American female Episcopal priest to the founders of the first black-owned insurance company in the U.S.

This project was made possible by a grant from the Friends of the Durham County Library.
