Don't Fear the RSS Reader

Workshop trains users how RSS feeds can help them gather information

If time is money, than utilizing a RSS feed can help save you some cash. RSS, or Really Simple Syndication feeds, allows members of the Duke community to optimize the way they surf the Internet and get their information. This week, the Center for Instructional Technology will demonstrate how faculty and staff can utilize RSS feeds to help them with their own Web surfing habits, whether at home or for teaching a class. During the workshop, "Let News Come to You with RSS," CIT Assistant Director Amy Campbell will briefly and non-technically explain what RSS is and how it works, demonstrate typical "RSS reader" software, and discuss how RSS is useful as a way to manage information. Campbell will lead two workshops, from noon to 1:15 p.m. Dec. 10 and from 3 to 4:15 p.m. Dec. 11. Both will be held in room 217 in Perkins Library on Duke's West Campus. Attendees will be introduced at each session to one popular method which CIT feels will benefit faculty and staff who are looking for new approaches to help them organize information, collaborate on projects or share materials with others. After the presentation, there will be a discussion about the usefulness of RSS. Lunch will be provided to participants in the Dec. 10 session who register today. To register for the class, call Patricia Pawlak at 660-5806.
