University employees given Dec. 26 as paid day off

Provost Peter Lange and Executive Vice President Tallman Trask III announced Friday that all university employees could take Friday, Dec. 26, off with pay. The university will be essentially closed on that day. University employees already receive Dec. 24 and Dec. 25 as holidays.

The policy does not cover members of the bargaining units with specific contract provisions about Dec. 26 or employees of Duke University Health System. Employees should contact their supervisors if there is uncertainty about their status.

The day will not count against employees' vacation time or sick leave. The announcement was sent out by e-mail blast to all university employees.

"As we come to the end of a most eventful 2008, and prepare to enter a new year that brings both uncertainties and opportunities, we encourage you to use this season as a time of renewal and recharging," the announcement stated. "To that end, we invite all University employees to take December 26 off, with pay. The University will essentially be closed next Friday, and access to buildings and services will be quite limited. We hope you will spend this day with your family and friends."
