Checkpoints Scheduled in Durham on Halloween

Duke Police joins Durham's "Booze It and Lose It" effort

The Duke University Police Department is joining other law enforcement agencies this week as part of a Halloween "Booze It & Lose It" campaign to deter drunken drivers.

Two Duke police officers will join Durham police and other agencies at undisclosed checkpoints in Durham during the crackdown starting Thursday, said Duke police Maj. Gloria Graham.

"Our hope is that people will make responsible decisions when it comes to driving and that they will abstain from drinking," Graham said.

"Booze it & Lose It" features stepped up patrols and checkpoints statewide during the campaign, which ends Sunday. Last year, officers cited 900 motorists statewide for driving while impaired during the effort, according to Gov. Mike Easley's office.

"Halloween is a fun tradition shared by people of all ages but irresponsible behavior can quickly spoil the evening," Easley said this week. "I urge North Carolinians to think ahead and not drink and drive."
