Watch for Campus Traffic Tuesday

Plan ahead: Traffic expected during student move-in

A Duke student prepares to move-in on East Campus last year. Expect traffic congestion on campus Tuesday.

Along with the excitement of 1,800 first-year students and parents arriving at Duke's East Campus on Tuesday come U-Haul trucks and overstuffed cars.

Faculty and staff who work on or near East Campus should allow more time Tuesday, Aug. 19, to commute and consider alternate routes, if possible. It may even be a good idea to postpone a visit to East Campus that day.

Traffic congestion is expected from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Main Street, Broad Street, Swift Avenue, Buchanan Boulevard and Markham Avenue. Other traffic is expected on Anderson Drive and Duke University Road as the Nasher Museum of Art unveils its "El Greco to Velazquez" exhibition to national and international media.

Staff and faculty are encouraged to follow these parking rules Tuesday:

  • Staff and faculty can not park on East Campus from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday and all entrances to East Campus will be closed to staff and faculty during those hours.
  • Duke parking permit holders may park on the periphery of East Campus, on either side of any neighboring street or in the Asbury Methodist Church parking lot. (Asbury Methodist Church requests the first two rows of the church lot be kept clear.)
  • The two-hour time parking limit usually imposed on many neighboring streets will not be enforced on Tuesday.
  • Vehicles on East Campus after 6 p.m. on Monday without a permit from the dean of students office may be subject to citations and/or towing. Also, vehicles parked in the Whole Foods lot on Broad Street are subject to towing.

Duke University Police Department officers will assist with traffic at East Campus entrances. Officers advise employees to only park in legal spaces.

"Employees can park along the streets except in fire lanes and areas that block traffic," said Duke Police Lt. Tony Shipman.
