B.N. Duke Scholarship Winners Announced

Fifteen students from North and South Carolina have been selected; the scholarship covers full tuition, room, board and mandatory fees for eight semesters.

Fifteen students from North and South Carolina have been selected winners of Benjamin N. Duke Scholarships, which are undergraduate merit awards at Duke University.

Each year, a faculty committee presents the awards to students from North and South Carolina who demonstrate strong academic performance, outstanding leadership ability and community involvement.

The scholarship, created with funds from The Duke Endowment, covers full tuition, room, board and mandatory fees for eight semesters. It also includes leadership development activities and two summer programs, one in the Carolinas and one abroad, during a scholar's college career. The value of the scholarship is more than $200,000 over four years.

This year's North Carolina recipients (alphabetically by county) are:

Durham

-- Alejandro Javier Cortese of Durham, a senior at C.E. Jordan High School, and son of Laura Voglino and Jorge Cortese.

Edgecombe

-- John Randolph Deans of Rocky Mount, a senior at Rocky Mount High School, and son of Charlotte and William Deans.

Forsyth

-- David A.P. Womble of Winston-Salem, a senior at Forsyth Country Day School, and son of Erna and Bill Womble Jr.

Guilford

-- Khadijah Zafar Bhatti of High Point, a senior at The Early College at Guilford in Greensboro, and daughter of Jamila and Mohammad Bhatti.

-- Cody Jay Harker of Kernersville, a senior at Northwest Guilford High School in Greensboro, and son of Stephanie and Cory Newton.

-- Alexander Prather Miller of Greensboro, a senior at Woodberry Forest School in Woodberry Forest, Va., and son of Stephanie and William Miller.

Mecklenburg

-- James Brandon Hill of Charlotte, a senior at Harding University High, and son of Renee and Henderson Hill.

-- John Thomas Luttrell of Charlotte, a senior at Charlotte Catholic High School, and son of Mary and Thomas Luttrell.

Pitt

-- Lauren Elizabeth Anderson of Greenville, a senior at North Pitt High School in Bethel, and daughter of Barbara and Eric Anderson.

Transylvania

-- Davis Neal Graham of Brevard, a senior at Carolina Day School in Asheville, and son of Caroline and Angus Graham.

Wake

-- Charlotte Thompson Mabe of Raleigh, a senior at William G. Enloe High School, and daughter of Walker and John Mabe.

-- Alice HwaChuan Yen of Raleigh, a senior at William G. Enloe High School, and daughter of Laura and Tien-Shi Yen.

Horry

-- Stormi Rae Chadwick of Conway, a senior at Scholars Academy/Conway High, and daughter of Cheryl and Arthur Chadwick.

Georgetown

-- Michael David Oberst of Georgetown, a senior at Georgetown High School, and son of Julia and Michael Oberst.

Marion

-- Benjamin Taylor DeMarco of Marion, a senior at Marion High School, and son of Debbie and Paul DeMarco.

The scholarships were established by The Duke Endowment to honor Benjamin N. Duke, one of the founders of Duke University.
