Athletics Director Search Committee Announced

Committee members will recommend to President Brodhead candidates to succeed Joe Alleva.

On Friday, President Richard H. Brodhead sent an e-mail to university trustees, senior administrators and athletic advisors announcing the members of the search committee who will recommend to the president their candidates for Duke's next director of athletics. Here is the text of that e-mail:

I'm pleased to announce the membership of the search committee for the Director of Athletics. The following have agreed to serve:

-- Roy Bostock, former trustee (chair) -- Richard Riddell, Vice President and University Secretary (vice chair) -- James Coleman, Professor of Law, member of the Athletic Council -- Kip Frey, member of the Athletics Advisory Board -- Sue Harnett, member of the Athletics Advisory Board -- Jon Jackson, Associate Director of Athletics/Communication -- Kerstin Kimel, Coach, Women's Lacrosse -- Carol (Cookie) Kohn, trustee, member of the Athletic Council -- John Mack, trustee -- Clarence G. Newsome, trustee -- Kathleen K. Smith, Professor of Biology, Faculty Athletics Representative 1998-2007 -- Tallman Trask III, Executive Vice President

I have asked the committee to conduct a national search with the aim of securing the best Director of Athletics we can possibly find -- a person of the highest integrity with deep commitment to the welfare of student-athletes.

The Director of Athletics needs to:

• Be able to support and inspire programs that reach the highest levels of athletic performance; • Be committed to Duke's special tradition of athletic and academic excellence, and give leadership to this cause; • Possess superb managerial skills needed to run a large, complex organization; and • Be an effective communicator of the vision and values of Duke athletics within the department, to outside audiences, and to other parts of the university.

The committee will be happy to receive recommendations of candidates and suggestions of criteria to be used in assessing candidates. These can be submitted through Ira Mueller, Assistant to the University Secretary, who has kindly agreed to staff the committee. Her address is ira.mueller@duke.edu.

My thanks to Roy Bostock and his colleagues for taking on this important task.

Richard H. Brodhead President
