The University and Sustainability

September conference to explore university's role in promoting sustainability

"Sustainability" is a big buzzword around Duke and other college campuses these days. We talk about "eco-friendly building" and recycling. But what does the university have to say about sustainability off campus?

The Duke Global Health Institute and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill are co-organizing a reception and conference on: "Sustainable Community Development: Does the University Have a Role?" Sept. 5-6.

The pre-conference reception is being held at the Nasher Museum Sept. 5 from 6-8 p.m. Michael Merson, director of the Duke Global Health Institute, Barbara Rimer, dean of the UNC School of Public Health, and Charles Sanders, of the NC GSK Foundation will speak. Student poster presentations will be on display in the main room of the Nasher, and Dan and Lia Perjovschi's art exhibit will be open to the attendees.

The keynote speaker on Sept. 6 at the Searle Center is William C. Richardson, president emeritus of Johns Hopkins University and the W.K. Kellogg Foundation. There will also be panel discussions including faculty and students from various academic fields.

The pre-conference reception and the conference are free, but registration is required. Visit here to register and for more information about participants.
