Baseball and Reading in Vietnam

Summer program is first step toward closer ties with Hanoi University

Lucy Haagen (pictured below) talks with students and faculty from Duke and Hanoi University during a Duke and Hanoi University-sponsored summer program in Vietnam. Students from both universities ran a summer camp for children in the village of Ba Vi.

The summer camp is the first step toward building closer ties between the two universities. Plans are for the institutions to collaborate on a summer course next year in Hanoi in which Duke and Hanoi students would live and study together.

As part of the summer camp this year, Duke students taught the Ba Vi children how to play baseball. (For photo, click here.) Students also donated more than 200 children's, English and American studies books to Vietnam university programs and to the Ba Vi village.

Haagen, a lecturer in the Program in Education and a literacy expert, supervised the Duke trip. For a Vietnam News article about the summer program, click here.
