Museum Exhibit Honors Jack Coombs

A new museum exhibit in Kennebunk, Maine, honors "Colby Jack" Coombs, a major league baseball star and longtime coach of Duke baseball.

The Brick Store Museum exhibit Kennebunk's Big Leaguers: The Baseball Legacies of Colby Jack and Bobby Coombs, opens July 8.

who have called Kennebunk home: "Colby Jack" Coombs (1882-1957) and his nephew Bobby Coombs (1908-1991). Jack's standout achievements as a pitcher included three wins for the Philadelphia Athletics in the 1910 World Series and numerous league records that stand to this very day. He finished his career with a 5-1 record in World Series play.

After his major league career, Jack Coombs coached at Duke from 1929-1952. Duke teams had a record of 381-171 under his leadership, and 47 of his players made it to the major leagues. His team made it to the College World Series in 1952. He is a member of the Duke Sports Hall of Fame, the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame and the Collegiate Baseball Coaches Hall of Fame. Duke's baseball stadium is named after him.

The exhibition is based largely upon the assistance of surviving family members and original research on Colby Jack Coombs by John Tierney.

This exhibition remains on view through December 29, 2007.
