Duke Announces Winners of B.N. Duke Scholarships

Ten recent high school graduates have been selected winners of the prestigious Benjamin N. Duke Scholarships, which are undergraduate merit awards at Duke University.

The awards are presented annually by a faculty committee to students from North and South Carolina who demonstrate strong academic performance, outstanding leadership ability and community involvement.

The scholarships cover full tuition, two paid summers of service and a strong in-school leadership program to enhance the students' studies. Based on estimated tuition rates, this scholarship is worth more than $130,000 to a student enrolled for four years.

This year's recipients are:

-- Hilary Lynn Cole of Black Mountain, N.C., a graduate of Charles D. Owen High School and the daughter of Barbara and Brian Cole.

-- Hannah Blair Hellebush of Winston-Salem, a graduate of Forsyth County Day High School in Lewisville, N.C., and the daughter of Diana and Peter Hellebush.

-- Rui Jiang of West Columbia, S.C., a graduate of the Governor's School for Science and Math in Hartsville, S.C., and the daughter of Yuanzhen Wu and Xiangrong Jiang.

-- Matthew Thomas Keshian of Winston-Salem, a graduate of R.J. Reynolds High School and the son of Nancy and Richard Keshian.

-- Snayha Murthy Nath of Cary, N.C., a graduate of William G. Enloe High School in Raleigh and the daughter of Deepika and Sudhir Nath.

-- William Chandler Rhem of Greenville, N.C., a graduate of Farmville Central High School and the son of Veronica and Karrem Rhem.

-- Kiley Jordan Samz of New Bern, N.C., a graduate of New Bern High School and the daughter of Tammy and Kevin Samz.

-- Anthony Lawrence Sanderson of Myrtle Beach, S.C., a graduate of Myrtle Beach High School and the son of Gayle and Larry Sanderson.

-- Talia Devorah Saxe of Charlotte, a graduate of Myers Park High School and the daughter of Jessica Schorr Saxe and Allen Saxe.

-- Lindsey Marie Wallace of Simpsonville, S.C., a graduate of Mauldin High School in Mauldin, S.C., and the daughter of Susan and Kevin Wallace.

The scholarships were established by The Duke Endowment to honor Benjamin N. Duke, one of the founders of Duke University.
