Police Honor Fallen Comrades

Duke Chapel service pays tribute to slain officers

Police officers from across North Carolina gathered at Duke Chapel for a special memorial service honoring the four state police officers that died in the line of duty during the past year on Tuesday morning. Ret. Gen Hugh Shelton, the former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, gave the keynote address. The service honored Cpl. Billy T. Gregory, Durham Police Department, who was killed April 24, 2004; Capt. Byron D. Carpenter, Belmont Police Department, who was killed April 16, 2005; Deputy Sheriff Bobby Lee Cox, Burke County Sheriff's Office, who was killed Sept. 14, 2005; and Deputy Sheriff Christopher B. Matthews, Cumberland County Sheriff's Office, who was killed Sept. 30, 2005.
