Local Choirs to Perform at Carnegie Hall

Duke Chapel music director Rodney Wynkoop to lead May 28 performance by Duke Chapel Choir, Duke Chorale and Choral Society of Durham

The Duke Chapel Choir, Duke Chorale and Choral Society of Durham, led by Duke Chapel music director Rodney Wynkoop, will perform May 28 at New York City's Carnegie Hall.

About 40 members of the Duke Chapel Choir, joined by more than 100 from the Duke Chorale and the Choral Society of Durham, will be performing with the New England Symphonic Ensemble and soloists Liesl Odenweller, soprano, and Gerard Sundberg, baritone. They will sing two works: Vaughan Williams' "Dona Nobis Pacem" and Beethoven's "Choral Fantasy."

Wynkoop said his first decision, after accepting the invitation to conduct at Carnegie Hall by Mid-America Productions, was to invite Duke and Durham choral singers to make up the choir.

"We have such excellent choral singing here in this area, and I knew that they would sing with passion and eloquence," he said. "It was exciting to offer them such a wonderful opportunity to sing in Carnegie Hall, but I also knew that having them sing would benefit the concert, because they are among the best choral singers in the country."

Tickets for the 8:30 p.m. concert may be obtained by contacting the Carnegie Hall box office at <http://www.carnegiehall.org>.
