Police Request Assistance Locating Suspect In Assault Off Campus (Update: Arrest Made)

Victim is a non-Duke employee who works on Central Campus

Durham and Duke police investigators are asking for the public's help in locating a man who allegedly sexually assaulted a woman who works on Duke University's Central Campus.

The domestic-related incident occurred off Duke's campus on Jan. 27, and the suspect -- Herbert Earl Lawrence -- is at large, Durham investigators said. An arrest warrant has been issued for Lawrence on charges of first-degree rape, first-degree and second-degree kidnapping and auto theft.

Lawrence, 39, allegedly assaulted the woman, a non-Duke employee, at her east Durham home and held her and her child captive for two days before taking the woman and child to a hospital, according to a news release issued by Durham police.

Police said Lawrence might be driving a dark blue 2003 Chevrolet Tracker with North Carolina license tag, PXZ-1738. His last known address, according to Durham records, is 105 S. Benjamin St.

Anyone with information about Lawrence's whereabouts is asked to call Durham investigator C.C. Britt at 560-4281; Duke Police at 684-2444 or Durham CrimeStoppers at 683-1200. CrimeStoppers pays cash rewards for information leading to arrests in felony cases. Callers may remain anonymous.
