Colin Powell to Speak at Duke Nov. 4

Powell will deliver the keynote address during dedication events for Rubenstein Hall, the second building of Duke's Terry Sanford Institute of Public Policy

Gen. Colin L. Powell (Ret.), former U.S. Secretary of State, will deliver the keynote address Nov. 4 during dedication events for Rubenstein Hall, the second building of Duke University's Terry Sanford Institute of Public Policy.

Powell is scheduled to speak on "Diplomacy: Persuasion, Trust and Values" at 4 p.m. in Wilson Recreational Center, on Duke's West Campus. The talk is free and open to the public. Doors will open at 3 p.m.

"General Powell is one of our nation's most respected statesmen, and we are really looking forward to welcoming him as we mark this important milestone in the growth and development of the Sanford Institute," said institute director Bruce Kuniholm.

Rubenstein Hall, which opened in August, doubles the Sanford Institute's office space and adds classrooms and multimedia capacities. It is named for its principal benefactor, David M. Rubenstein, a founding partner and managing director of The Carlyle Group, a global private equity firm. Rubenstein, a 1970 magna cum laude graduate of Duke, was deputy domestic policy assistant to President Jimmy Carter from 1977 to 1981. He joined the Duke Board of Trustees on July 1.

Powell's address is part of a series of Nov. 4 events celebrating the opening of Rubenstein Hall, including four symposia on "International Challenges to Public Policy," from global health inequalities and child welfare to foreign policy and international development. Panelists include scholars from Princeton, Rice and Duke universities, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the International Monetary Fund. The symposia are open to the public and start at 8:30 a.m. Details are available on the Sanford Institute's website at <http://www.pubpol.duke.edu>.

During Powell's 35-year career in the U.S. Army, he rose to the rank of four-star general and served as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (1989 “1993). In 2001, Powell became the 65th Secretary of State and served through 2004, during the first term of President George W. Bush.

Since returning to private life in early 2005, Powell has become a strategic limited partner at Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, a Silicon Valley venture capital firm. He is also on the board of directors of Revolution Health Care, a company developing strategies for consumer-directed health care. Powell is the founder of the Colin Powell Policy Center at his alma mater, the City College of New York, and is helping to raise funds for the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial in Washington, D.C., and for the construction of an education center for the Vietnam Veterans Memorial.
