Interfaith Prayer, Fall Break Trip Aimed at Hurricane Victims

Students will put faith into action during time in Alabama

An interfaith prayer service for the victims of hurricanes Katrina and Rita will be held at 12:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 6, on the front steps of Duke Chapel.

Thirty-five students will then put those thoughts into action when they travel to Alabama to do flood relief work during Duke's fall break Oct. 8-11.

"Disaster strikes people of all faiths," said Craig Kocher, assistant dean of the chapel. "Our desire is to acknowledge the pain and loss suffered by victims of the recent hurricanes, and to ask God to help us move forward in hope and healing."

The prayer service will include a reflection from Chapel Dean Sam Wells and testimonials from two students whose lives were directly affected by the storms' devastation. Duke Religious Life groups representing different faiths will offer prayers from their own traditions.

The fall break trip, sponsored by Duke Chapel, will be led by Chapel Missions intern Michelle Shrader and Black Campus Ministries director Rev. Patrick Thompson.
