Duke Police Investigate Intentionally Set Fires

No one injured; minor damage reported

Duke Police are investigating two fires that were deliberately set this week in Giles residence hall on East Campus.

No one was injured in the incidents; the fires caused minor damage to a men's restroom and rug in a study room.

"Something that seems funny can quickly escalate into a situation that can cause injuries," said Maj. Phyllis Cooper of the Police Department's investigations division.  "We take this very seriously.''

The first fire was reported at 11:26 a.m. Tuesday by an employee who was cleaning the third-floor men's restroom and discovered fire damage to a sink and toilet seat.

On Wednesday evening, a residence coordinator in Giles reported a burned rug in a third-floor study room.

Estimated property damage in both fires is $150.

Charges have not been filed, but investigators are interviewing residents and following up on leads.
