Margaret Pericak-Vance | Adam Wax | Ruth Anderson

Margaret Pericak-Vance, James B. Duke Professor of Medicine, received the Wells College 2003 Alumnae Award. Pericak-Vance, a 1973 Wells graduate, was cited for her work in exploring the causes of a wide variety of genetic disorders. She serves as director of the Duke Center for Human Genetics.

Duke faculty member Adam Wax is one of 24 recipients of Oak Ridge Associated Universities' (ORAU) Ralph E. Powe Junior Faculty Enhancement Awards for the 2003-2004 academic year. Wax is assistant professor of biomedical engineering.

The grants of $5,000 each are intended to provide "seed money" to allow faculty members in their first two years of tenure track to enhance their research during the early stages of their careers. Each recipient's institution matches the ORAU award with an additional $5,000. Awards were made in five areas of science and technology: engineering and applied science; life sciences; mathematics and computer science; physical sciences; and policy, management, or education. Faculty members will use grant funds for the continuation of research, purchase of equipment, and travel to professional meetings and conferences.

Ruth Anderson, associate professor in the School of Nursing, has been elected a fellow by the American Academy of Nursing, one of the highest honor in the nursing profession.

One of the criterion for academy membership is recognition by one's peers of having made outstanding contributions to nursing over and above those which are required in one's position of employment. Each nominee also must be sponsored for membership by two academy fellows. Anderson, a leading specialist in the study of management of long-term care cases, will be inducted at the academy's fall meeting in San Diego.
