Harvey Named Development Director for Student Affairs

New officer will aid Vice President for Student Affairs Larry Moneta in financing renovation of West Campus student space into 'student village'

DURHAM, N.C. -- Laura Treat Harvey, who has nearly two decades of development, marketing and sales experience, has been named director of development for Duke University's Division of Student Affairs, university officials announced Thursday.

Harvey has been Duke's assistant director of corporate and foundation relations since 2001. Previously, she spent four years as the director of development for the Durham Arts Council, Inc.

"Treat offers just the perfect balance of skill, experience and personality," said Larry Moneta, vice president for student affairs. "She knows Duke development quite well, has had extensive experience with fundraising and is just a delight to be with."

Moneta created this new position to support various improvements to student services, including the West Campus student village -- a construction project to expand meeting, support services and social space -- and Career Center enhancements.

Harvey, who was selected after a national search, has a bachelor's degree in French language and literature from Smith College. In 2000, she completed Duke's certificate program in nonprofit management. She is a board member of the Durham Crisis Response Center and a participant in Leadership Durham.

Her experience includes organizing annual fund drives, training and motivating volunteers, and event planning. As assistant director in corporate and foundation relations, she also held fundraising and proposal-writing training sessions for Duke-Durham Neighborhood Partnership groups, which she plans to continue in her new role.

Harvey will begin her new job July 1.

"I am very excited about the Student Affairs vision and plans to enhance Duke's services for students," Harvey said. "It will be gratifying to help raise the money to make this vision a reality."
