Memorial Service Tuesday For Duke Student

A service will be held in Duke Chapel for Maggie Katharine Schneider, who died from injuries in a Thanksgiving weekend car wreck

A memorial service will be held at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday in Duke Chapel for Maggie Katharine Schneider, a Duke undergraduate who died from injuries sustained in a car wreck.

Schneider's family will be in attendance at the service, which is open to members of the Duke community.

Schneider, a junior biology major from St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada, was returning to the Duke Marine Lab in Beaufort from Nags Head on Nov. 30 with two Duke friends when the car they were riding in was hit by a pickup truck around 6:35 p.m., according to the state Highway Patrol. Schneider died about 2:30 p.m. Dec. 4.

The three friends, all attending the fall term at the Duke Marine Lab, had spent their Thanksgiving break at Nags Head visiting Schneider's grandparents. The other two students were not seriously injured.

The patrol spokesman said the driver of the pickup has been charged with several offenses, including driving while intoxicated, driving with a revoked license, hit and run driving and leaving the scene of the accident. Other charges may follow, the patrol spokesman said.

The Marine Lab, located on Pivers Island in Beaufort, is part of the Nicholas School of the Environment and Earth Sciences at Duke.
