Current Theology And Courtside Philosophy To Highlight 2001 Duke Divinity Convocation And Pastors' School Oct. 15-17

DURHAM, N.C. - Duke University Divinity School's 2001 Convocation and Pastors' School, to be held Oct. 15-17, will supplement its roster of outstanding theologians and pastors with a little basketball philosophy.

Mike Krzyzewski, the head coach of the 2001 NCAA champion Blue Devils men's basketball team - and a leader in constructing a community center at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church - will give the keynote address on Tuesday, Oct. 16, at 2 p.m. in the Bryan Center on Duke's West Campus. His topic, "Leading with the Heart," is based on his recent, well-received book of the same title and will concern leadership and the pursuit of excellence.

Miroslav Volf, professor of theology at Yale University Divinity School, will present the James A. Gray lectures during the three-day event. Volf, a respected theologian and prolific author, has served with the Vatican Council for Promotion of Christian Unity.

The Gray lectures are scheduled for 2 p.m. Oct. 15 and 10:30 a.m. Oct. 16. He also will sit for conversation during seminar periods at 3:30 p.m. on Oct. 16 and 17.

Also featured are Franklin S. Hickman lecturers Kenneth L. Carder, bishop for the Mississippi area of the United Methodist Church, at 9 a.m. Oct. 16 and Rudy Rasmus, urban missionary and co-pastor of St. John's United Methodist in Houston, at 9 a.m. Oct. 17. The convocation preacher is Hope Morgan Ward, director of connectional ministries for the United Methodist Church in the North Carolina area and a Duke Divinity alumna.

All of the lectures will be presented in the Bryan Center.

The Center for Continuing Education at Duke Divinity School sponsors this annual event to help educate pastors and lay leaders on the most current theological issues.

This year, the convocation and pastors' school coincides with the divinity school's 75th anniversary celebration and its theme: "Transforming Ministry." Speakers and seminar leaders will explore various aspects of the transformative power of ministry for pastors, parishioners, the churches that they inhabit and the culture in which we all live.
