Sharp-Shooting Blue Devils Down Wake Forest, 95-68

Box Score

DURHAM, N.C. – Redshirt sophomore Rebecca Greenwell and freshman Angela Salvadores combined to shoot 9-of-15 (60.0 percent) from deep to pace Duke to a 95-68 victory over the Wake Forest Demon Deacons Thursday night in Cameron Indoor Stadium. Sophomore Azurá Stevens and Greenwell poured in 23 and 21 points respectively, the first Duke duo to post 20-point performances in the same game this season. Salvadores finished with an efficient 18 points, while junior Oderah Chidom rounded out the Blue Devils' double-figure scorers by netting 12.

Duke notches its first victory against the conference, moving to 12-4 overall and 1-1 in ACC play. With the loss, Wake Forest drops to 9-6 on the season and 0-2 versus conference foes.

It was the Rebecca Greenwell show over the first 10 minutes of action as she scored 14 points, the most ever by a Blue Devil in a single quarter, to help keep the score deadlocked at 25-25 heading into the second period. The Demon Deacons were dialed in from deep to start the game, connecting on 5-of-6 from deep, but Greenwell finished the quarter 4-of-7 from behind the arc herself to carry the Blue Devils. Also contributing heavily for the home team was Stevens, finishing the quarter with seven points of her own.

After scoring two points in the first quarter, Salvadores came alive and netted 10 in the second quarter alone, leading Duke to a 43-39 lead at the half. In a reversal from the first quarter, Duke's defense limited Wake Forest to 0-of-5 from deep. The Demon Deacons made their way to the charity stripe early and often but were unable to take advantage, shooting just 8-of-14 (57.1 percent) from the line.

Sparked by a 10-0 and 9-0 run, Duke put the game virtually out of reach in the third quarter, outscoring Wake Forest 34-12 to build a 77-51 advantage heading into the fourth quarter. Salvadores' stellar play from the second quarter carried over into the second half as she knocked down two three-pointers to start the third period, while junior Oderah Chidom poured in seven during the quarter. After a quiet second quarter, Stevens bounced back with 11 in the third, including a personal 5-0 run late in the period.

The final quarter was a back-and-forth affair, but five points from Chidom and four courtesy of sophomore Erin Mathias paced the fourth-quarter attack and helped Duke secure the 95-68 win. Duke held a key advantage in the turnover battle, forcing 23 miscues from the Demon Deacons during the contest and turning them into 27 points.

The Blue Devils will continue ACC play with a road trip to Louisville, Ky., to battle Louisville Sunday, Jan. 10 at 1 p.m. The matchup against the Cardinals will be aired on ESPN3.
