DURHAM, N.C. – David W. Zaas, M.D., MBA, has been named president of Duke Raleigh Hospital, effective July 1, 2014.

Zaas currently serves as chief medical officer for the Duke faculty practice and vice-chair for clinical practice in the Duke University Department of Medicine.

“We will continue to aspire to provide the highest quality care and the best patient experience for the residents of Wake County,” Zaas said. “I am really excited to work with an outstanding team at Duke Raleigh to help build on the strong foundation that has been established.”

Zaas earned his Doctor of Medicine degree from Northwestern University Medical School and his MBA from Duke's Fuqua School of Business. He arrived at Duke in 2001 to complete his fellowship training and joined the Duke faculty in 2005. A pulmonary and critical care physician by training, Zaas formerly served as medical director for lung transplantation at Duke from 2008 to 2012.

Zaas was appointed chief medical officer in 2011 and helped lead many key strategic initiatives for Duke Medicine, including the deployment of the Duke Maestro Care electronic health record as well as the Duke Medicine Access Initiative.

Zaas succeeds Richard J. Gannotta, who became president of Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago in February.
