DURHAM, N.C. – The Duke rowing team will begin its fall season this Sunday, Oct. 20, by hosting Tennessee on Lake Michie in Bahama, N.C., beginning at 8:30 a.m. The teams will square off in two races in the pair, two in the four and one in the novice six.
The event will be the first of the season for the Blue Devils, who in 2012-13 cracked the CRCA/US Rowing Top 20 and clocked top five times in the school record books in the varsity eight, second varsity eight and varsity four. Rowing begins at 8:30 a.m. in a showdown of 12 pairs, followed by the 9:30 a.m. competition in the four. The novice sixes follow at 10:30 a.m. before the A class fours row at 11:30 a.m. and the B class pairs round out the race at 12:30 p.m.
Duke returns 30 rowers from last seasons' squad, including seven of nine members of the varsity eight. Among that group are reigning ACC Freshman of the Year Katie Dukovich, senior coxswain Caroline Kiritsy, three-year V8 rower Grace Cassidy and juniors Claire Vannelli and Tara Dalton, who have also been fixtures of Duke's top boat since their freshman season.
The matchup against Tennessee is the first of two fall events for the Blue Devils. Duke will head to Princeton, N.J., the following weekend for the Princeton Chase on Carnegie Lake Oct. 27.
