Duke Announces 2013-14 Wrestling Schedule

DURHAM, N.C.—Duke University wrestling head coach Glen Lanham has announced the 2013-14 schedule that featured six home matches, including two against Big Ten opponents. The Blue Devils will compete in three tournaments and will have duals against four teams that finished among the top 20 at the 2012 NCAA Championships.

Duke opens the 2013-14 campaign at the Citadel Open Nov. 2 before traveling to the Hokie Open the following weekend. Redshirt sophomore Conner Hartmann will look to repeat as the 197-pound champion at the Hokie Open, while redshirt junior Immanuel Kerr-Brown aims to improve his placing.

“We are very excited about the upcoming schedule,” Lanham said. “As everyone will see, just like last year's schedule it is very competitive. Our main goal in preparing a schedule like this is to get our guys ready for ACC's and NCAAs. We wanted our wrestlers competing at a high level and to be battle-tested throughout the year. I hope to see all of our Duke wrestling fans at Card Gym this year.”

The Blue Devils' first dual will come against a formidable Big Ten opponent in Purdue on Nov. 16. The former home of Lanham and assistant coach Ben Wissel, the Boilermakers will be the first of four Big Ten foes Duke will face.

The next day, the guys will make the short trip to Bloomington, Ind. for the Indiana Duals featuring Cleveland State and Indiana. It will be the fifth bout between Duke and the Hoosiers as the Blue Devils try to get their first win over a Big Ten foe.

Following the prestigious Southern Scuffle in January and the inaugural ACC bout with Pittsburgh, the Blue Devils make their home debut against ACC foe Virginia Jan. 17 at 7 p.m., in Card Gymnasium.

The match with the Cavaliers opens a weekend that also features a visiting Stanford squad Jan. 18. It will be the first bout between the Blue Devils and Cardinal and the first match against a west coast school.

Following a pair of road matches, Duke hosts VMI Jan. 29 in preparation for a northeast road swing to Drexel and Rider Feb. 1. The Blue Devils return to the friendly confines of Card Gym for a meeting with Gardner-Webb Feb. 5.

ACC foes Maryland and North Carolina await the Blue Devils Feb. 8 and Feb. 11, respectively. Duke closes its regular season road schedule five days later at The Citadel.

Duke finishes the regular season with a bang, hosting ACC rival NC State Feb. 22 at 10 a.m., and Northwestern at 2 p.m. The Blue Devils will take a breather for the next couple of weeks to make final preparations for the ACC Championships Mar. 8 in Blacksburg, Va. The NCAA Championships will be held in Oklahoma City March 20-22.

Duke returns eight starters from last season in which it sent two wrestlers to the NCAA Championships and finished the year 9-10 overall.
