Duke Lands Five on IWLCA All-South Region Teams

DURHAM, N.C. – Five representatives of the Duke women's lacrosse team have earned Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) All-South Region honors, as announced by the organization Wednesday. Junior defender Taylor Virden was named to the first team, while sophomores Kerrin Maurer, Gabby Moise and Taylor Trimble and freshman goalkeeper Kelsey Duryea garnered second team honors.

Virden collected her second all-region nod in as many years and was named to the first team for the first time in her career. Moise, Maurer Trimble and Duryea were named to the all-region squad for the first time in their respective careers. Maryland and Florida had six players on the All-South Region teams, followed by Duke and North Carolina with five.

A product of Elliot City, Md., Virden has paced the Blue Devils this season with 48 draw controls and 30 ground balls. Virden ranks third in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) in caused turnovers per game with 1.20 and fifth in draw controls (3.0). For her career, Virden has played in 55 games and has won 116 draw controls, while tallying six goals and one assist.

Duke's leading scorer this spring, Maurer is enjoying a career season for the Blue Devils. The sophomore has recorded career-highs in goals (32), assists (27), points (59) and draw controls (12). She leads the ACC in assists per game (2.0) for the season and is third in the conference averaging 3.80 points per contest. Maurer is also one of just 13 players in Duke history to register 50 or more assists in a career, doing so in just her second season.

Earning her way onto the All-South second team for the first time in her career, Moise has enjoyed a standout sophomore season for the Blue Devils that saw her lead the ACC in caused turnovers with 24, averaging 1.40 per contest.

Leading the Blue Devil attack throughout the season, Trimble picked up her first all-region selection. The All-ACC honoree is one of just two players on the squad to reach double figures in goals (31), ground balls (10) and draw controls (41) this spring.

Duryea adds to the accolades from her impressive rookie season in a Duke uniform, as the Beverly, Mass., product was named to the second team squad. A 2013 All-ACC selection, Duryea leads the conference in saves per game (11) and save percentage (.557). The rookie has amassed 113 saves on the season, leading to an 8-4 record.

The Blue Devils will return to the field against Princeton in the first round of the NCAA Women's Lacrosse Championships Friday, May 10 at 7:15 p.m. The game will be played at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis, Md.
