DURHAM, N.C. – Sophomore Michael Ricaurte of the Duke men's golf team recently sat down with GoDuke.com and shared highlights throughout his golf career. Ricaurte owns a 77.3 stroke average for the season and a low round of 73.
GoDuke.com: What kind of clubs do you play?
Michael Ricaurte: I play a Nike driver, three-wood, Nike irons and all Nike wedges. I switch back and forth between a Nike putter and a Scotty Cameron putter, but right now I am using the Nike.
GoDuke.com: What kind of pre-round superstitions do you have before tournaments?
MR: In high school, before try-outs I used to have a big piece of watermelon every day, but I haven't really done that since.
GoDuke.com: Is there a shot that sticks out in your mind that you have hit under pressure?
MR: My senior year of high school, in the final round. I came up to No. 17, a par three, and was pretty nervous. I hit a six iron off the tee right at the flagstick; it just barely carried the bunker and ended up about 10 feet from the hole. I made the putt and went on to win the championship.
GoDuke.com: What is your go to shot?
MR: That has to be a little draw off the tee and with my irons as well. I am really comfortable with that shot; it just fits my eye.
GoDuke.com: What is your favorite club?
MR: That would be my two iron. It saves me a lot and keeps me in play. I am not the most accurate player, but with that club I am pretty confident. The stinger is one of my favorite shots to play with a two iron.
GoDuke.com: Do you have a ball mark with any special significance?
MR: I actually like to use a golden dollar to mark my ball, whenever I have one with me. I started using them about a year ago and I liked the way it looked.
