Women's Golf Leads by 11 at ACC Championship

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Looking for its second straight and 18th overall ACC Championship, the third-ranked Duke women's golf team holds an 11-shot lead with 18 holes remaining at the 6,210-yard, Par 71 Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, N.C.  Duke has carded a 36-hole total of 585 and leads by 11 strokes over N.C. State (596).

As a team, Duke (585) has totaled rounds of 293 and 292.  Rounding out the field is N.C. State (596), Virginia (600), Florida State (609), Wake Forest (614), North Carolina (617), Miami (618), Boston College (625) and Maryland (632).

“It was one of those days when you end up with the lead and you feel pretty good about it,” commented Duke head coach Dan Brooks.  “However, it didn't feel like a low score type day, but when you look up at the board and see your scores, you know you've had a pretty good afternoon.”

Birdies were hard to come by once again on Saturday as the Blue Devils fended off a cool breeze and challenging greens as Duke posted only two birdies over the first nine holes, while finishing with eight for the day.  Over the first two rounds of the championship, Duke has carded 14 birdies.

Duke features three golfers in the top five of the individual leaderboard with Lindy Duncan (2nd), Celine Boutier (T5) and Laetitia Beck (T5).  Holding the individual lead for the second straight day is Virginia's Brittany Altomare with a one-under-par, 141.  Duncan, Duke's reigning NCAA Player of the Year, enters the final round just three shots off the lead as she is looking for her second straight ACC Individual title.

A native of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Duncan opened her day with a par before suffering two straight birdies to fall to two-over par.  She then carded 11 consecutive pars before heading to the par five 15th.  Duncan rolled in her first birdie of the day on No. 15 and then posted another birdie on No. 18 to close the day at even-par 71.  She is tied for second overall with a 144.  Duncan hit 14 greens, nine fairways and had 32 putts on the day.

Beck, a junior from Caesarea, Israel, had an eventful front nine with four pars, one birdie and four bogeys to make the turn with a three-over-par, 38.  She finished the day firing a one-under-par, 35, on the back nine as she drained a birdie on No. 15 for the second consecutive day.  Beck is tied for fifth with a two-day total of 147.

Boutier collected a par on the first hole to start her day, but totaled back-to-back bogeys on No. 2 and No. 3 to fall to two-over-par.  A native of Montrouge, France, Boutier collected seven consecutive pars before getting a stroke back on the 385-yard, par four 11th hole with a birdie.  She suffered bogeys on No. 14 and No. 15, but closed with a birdie on No. 18 to finish the day with a 73.  Boutier has totaled rounds of 74 and 73 for a total of 147, which is tied for fifth.

After carding a one-over-par, 72, on day one, junior Alejandra Cangrejo posted a 77 on Saturday and is now tied for 10th with a 149.  On the front nine, Cangrejo had a double-bogey on No. 2 and a bogey on No. 9 but had seven pars to go with those two scores.  She had four bogeys and a birdie on No. 15 to finish the day with a 77.

Senior Courtney Ellenbogen carded a four-over-par, 75, on Saturday and owns a two-day total of 157, which is tied for 30th.  A product of Blacksburg, Va., Ellenbogen posted pars on the first two holes before suffering three straight bogeys from No. 3-5 to drop to three-over-par.  She closed the front nine with four consecutive pars to make the turn with a 38.  On the back nine, Ellenbogen had a bogey on the 382-yard, par four 10th before finishing the day with eight straight pars to finish with a 75.

Duke will tee off on Sunday in the final round along with Virginia and N.C. State beginning at 10:10 a.m., off hole No. 1.  Fans can follow the action with live video at www.theacc.com along with live stats.  The live video will begin at 12:30 p.m.
