DURHAM, N.C. – Blue Devil junior
Laura Weinberg was selected the Ronald McDonald House Charities Duke Student-Athlete of the Week on Wednesday, after registering three goals, one assist and a total of seven points in two Duke victories over 15th-ranked Virginia Tech and 13th-ranked Boston College this past week.
A native of Boca Raton, Fla., Weinberg notched two goals on Thursday in a 3-2 overtime victory over the Hokies. The 5-9 forward netted the game-winning goal 6:42 into the first overtime, which was her third game-winner in ACC play and the fifth overall this season.
On Sunday versus Boston College, Weinberg tallied her 14th goal of the season in the second half to put the Blue Devils ahead 2-1. Duke went on to down the Eagles, 4-2, and Weinberg assisted on the final goal of the match by
Kim DeCesare to seal the Blue Devil victory.
Weinberg has registered goals in eight out of the last 10 matches and leads the ACC with 14. In the NCAA stats, Weinberg ranks third in goals per game (1.0), fourth in goals (14), fourth in points (33) and sixth in points per game (2.36). Her 14 goals ranks tied for fifth on Duke's single-season list, while her 33 points is tied for fifth as well. In the career charts at Duke, Weinberg ranks seventh in points (75) and fifth in goals (32).
The Blue Devils will next travel down the road to play at N.C. State on Thursday, Oct. 11 in Raleigh, N.C., at 7:00 p.m., on ESPN3.
