Mar Claims Title in Singles at Fab Four Invitational

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - On a rain soaked Sunday, the host Blue Devils were forced to move the Fab Four Invitational to North Carolina's Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center, but still went 4-1 in singles play to close out the three-day invitational. Junior Hanna Mar led the Blue Devils by completing her undefeated weekend of play Sunday by capturing the title in the white singles draw.

"Hanna's win of the draw highlighted the weekend," Said head coach Jamie Ashworth. "I thought she played well. I thought overall it was an average event for us. What we are going to talk about this week though is that we do not want to be average."

In the finals, Mar rolled to a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Texas' Noel Scott, completing her weekend of play with a 4-0 record, including a win Saturday over 10th-ranked Mary Anne Macfarlane of Alabama. Mar, ranked No. 35 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's (ITA) preseason rankings, is coming off a 2012 season in which she owned a 30-15 record in singles play and was named to the All-ACC team.

Meanwhile, sophomore Ester Goldfeld kicked off the day in the consolation finals, where she downed Lynda Xepolas of Purdue by a score of 6-4, 6-0. Senior Mary Clayton fell to 26th-ranked Zoe DeBruycker of North Carolina, 7-6 (6), 2-6, 1-0 (11).

"It gives us a lot to work on over the next two weeks before we play again," said Ashworth. "I was hoping to get some more win in singles, but it definitely gives everyone an idea of what they need to work on, and that is a major plus."

Junior Marianne Jodoin outlasted 71st-ranked Caroline Price of North Carolina in a three-set tiebreaker to claim seventh place in the white draw, and sophomore Annie Mulholland defeated Melissa Bolivar of Miami, 6-2, 6-2, to finish seventh in the blue singles draw.

The Blue Devils are slated to continue their fall season at the Riviera All-American in Pacific Palisades, Calif., on Sept. 29 - Oct. 7.

Final Round:

Mar (Duke) def. Scott (Texas), 6-1, 6-1
Goldfeld (Duke) def.  Xepolas (Purdue), 6-4, 6-0
DeBruycker (UNC) def. Clayton (Duke) 6-7 (6), 6-2, 1-0 (11)
Mulholland (Duke) def. Bolivar (Miami), 6-2, 6-2
