Nick McCrory qualified for the 2012 Olympic Games in his second event Saturday, taking second in the finals of the men's 10-meter platform competition on the final day of action at the U.S. Olympic Trials - Diving at the Weyerhauser King County Aquatic Center.
McCrory also earned an Olympic berth Thursday evening along with David Boudia as the top finishers in the men's synchronized 10-meter event.
The Chapel Hill, N.C. native entered Saturday's individual 10-meter finals in second place behind Boudia with 1043.95 points. McCrory began the final round by scoring 86.40 points on an inward 3 ½ somersault, and then earned 89.60 points on an armstand back 2 somersault with 1 ½ twists to bring his cumulative score to 1219.95, over 100 points ahead of Thomas Finchum in third place.
After tallying 92.40 points on a reverse 3 ½ tuck, a back 3 ½ somersault in the fifth round netted McCrory 99.00 points from the judges, including five 10s. He finished the evening with a total score of 1582.55 to place second and solidify a spot on the platform in London.
Fellow Duke diver Abby Johnston withdrew from the finals of the women's 3-meter springboard competition, which were also contested Saturday. Johnston was in 11th place after the preliminary and semifinal rounds. She and Kelci Bryant secured Olympic berths in the women's synchronized 3-meter event Thursday evening after edging Kassidy Cook and Christina Loukas by .42 points.
The women's 3-meter synchronized competition at the 2012 Olympic Games will be held on Sunday, July 29, while the men's 10-meter synchronized event is slated for Monday, July 30 at the London Aquatics Centre. The men's individual 10-meter platform competition will take place August 10-11.
