Cunha and Mengel Named All-ACC

DURHAM, N.C. - Duke's Henrique Cunha and Chris Mengel were among the 18 players selected to the 2012 All-ACC Men's Tennis Team, as voted on by the league's 12 head coaches and announced by the conference office Thursday.

Cunha was honored for the third consecutive season after previously being named to the All-ACC team in 2010 and 2011. The junior from Jaú, Brazil also received ACC Player of the Year and ACC Rookie of the Year recognition in 2010. Cunha, currently the fifth-ranked player nationally in singles, has compiled an overall singles ledger of 35-8 so far during the 2011-12 campaign, with the 35 singles wins placing him tied for fifth on Duke's single-season charts. He has tallied 21 victories over ranked opponents and notched a 9-2 mark in ACC singles play. A seven-time ACC Player of the Week this season, Cunha became the fourth player in program history to join the 100-win club in both singles and doubles and currently ranks tied for fourth with 111 singles victories and fifth with 105 doubles wins.

Mengel received the first All-ACC accolades of his career after reaching the 30-wins mark in singles play for the second time in as many seasons. A sophomore from Pittsburgh, Pa., Mengel went 7-4 this spring in ACC action and posted 10 wins over ranked opponents. Ranked 37th nationally in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association singles poll, Mengel is one of just three players in Duke history to win 30 or more matches in both his freshman and sophomore seasons.

Cunha and Mengel have teamed up for a 16-8 record in doubles this season, including an 8-3 ledger in conference play. They were tabbed the 18th-ranked doubles tandem in the nation in the most recent ITA poll.

Duke has had two or more All-ACC selections in 23 of the past 25 seasons.

The eighth-ranked Blue Devils advanced to the championship match at last weekend's ACC Men's Tennis Championship, falling to Virginia by a score of 4-1. The squad now awaits the 2012 NCAA Tournament selections, which will be announced Tuesday, May 1 at 5:30 p.m. on the NCAA.com.
