Coach P To Host Book Signing April 18 at Duke

DURHAM, N.C. – Following another successful season in which she led Duke women's basketball to their first outright Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) regular season championship since 2007 and an NCAA Elite Eight appearance, Head Coach Joanne P. McCallie will be signing copies of her first book Choice Not Chance at the Gothic Bookshop in the Bryan Student Events Center on April 18 from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m.

Completed prior to the start of the 2011-12 season, Choice Not Chance, chronicles McCallie's life from her youth in Maine through the beginning of her fifth season at the helm of Duke women's basketball. Along the way, she discusses events including her transition as a student-athlete at Northwestern University and working in downtown Chicago following graduation to her time as an assistant coach at Auburn University and her first NCAA Division I head coaching job at the age of 26.

Over her 20-year coaching career, McCallie has developed and refined the “Choice, Not Chance” philosophy that focuses teaching her players and kids at large how to think and focus on making correct choices in life. Choice Not Chance highlights the lessons she has learned throughout her life such as “Going against the grain,” “Never become satisfied,” and “Enjoying the prospect of getting better daily.”

With a foreword by Duke head men's basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski, the book has received acclaim from other public figures including Hall of Fame women's basketball coach Joe Ciampi, two U.S. Senators and Duke University Vice President and Director of Athletics Kevin White.

Joanne P. McCallie is inordinately bright and an exceptional leader both on and off the court. To be sure, her enthusiasm and passion for the game of women's basketball, and Duke University in general, is exceedingly contagious. That passion comes through clearly in the pages of Choice Not Chance,” White said.
