DURHAM, N.C. - Sophomore Domenick DeMatteo and senior Michael? Barbas both win gold for the Blue Devils on day one of the 2012 Duke Invitational.? Michael Barbas set the tone for the Blue Devils with a first place finish and season-high mark of 57-2.25 in the men's shot and later, Domenick DeMatteo ran an impressive 5,000 meters in his first attempt to finish in a time of 13:50.22, second on the Duke all- time list.?

DeMatteo's performance was the highlight of the action-packed 5,000 meter run but his teammate senior Andrew Brodeur also got his name on the all- time list with a fourth place finish and personal best time of 14:01.58.? He was followed closely by freshman Morgan Pearson (14:03.53) and sophomore Brian Atkinson (14:15.50) who finished in 6^th and 9^th in the impressive field.?

The men's high jump also proved to be exciting event to highlight the evening with Tanner Anderson breaking the seven foot barrier for the first time in 2012 by clearing 7-3.00 and finishing in second place overall behind Dante Nall who also cleared 7-3.00 but had less misses than Anderson.? Sophomore Michael Krone?cleared the seven foot mark for the first time in his outdoor collegiate career by clearing 7-0.50 which was good enough to tie for third overall. ??

For the women, Junior Michelle Anumba placed second in the women's shot put with a throw of 52-10.25.? She was bested by N.C. State's Tremanisha Taylor who threw a winning mark of 53-7.00 on her sixth and final throw. ?Sophomore Erica Brand also competed in the event and threw a personal best 45-5.75.?

In the women's pole vault, Amy Fryt finished second with a mark of 12- 7.50.? Junior Emily Mattoon and freshman Baily Murphy finished in seventh and eighth place for Duke.?

On the track, freshman multi-eventer Teddi Maslowski finished third with a time of 1:02.03 in her first collegiate attempt at the 400 meter hurdles.? Fellow freshman Elizabeth Kerpon finished close behind in ninth with a time of 1:02.93.?

One highlight to close the meet occurred in the women's 10,000 meters when unattached runner, Lindsey Scherf, surpassed the Olympic provisional standard by running a time of 33:33.76.? She ran the over six mile race entirely by herself and finished over two and half minutes ahead of the second place finisher.?

Competition will continue tomorrow at Wallace Wade Stadium starting at 9:00 a.m. with the women's discus and 9:45 a.m. with the women's developmental 800 meters.? A full recap and results will be available on www.GoDuke.com.
