DURHAM, N.C.-Duke University's
Andrew Wenger garnered yet another award as he was named the Atlantic Coast Conference Men's Soccer Scholar Athlete of the Year as announced by ACC Commissioner John Swofford. Wenger led Duke's six selections to the 2011 All-ACC Academic Team.
Joining Wenger on the All-ACC Academic Team were junior James Belshaw, freshmen Nat Eggleston and Nick Palodichuk and seniors Christopher and Daniel Tweed-Kent. Wenger, Belshaw and Chris Tweed-Kent all earned the distinction for the third time in their careers. The Blue Devils' six selections were the most in the league with no other team landing more than four players on the squad.
The most decorated men's college soccer player in ACC history, Wenger was voted the conference's Freshman of the Year in 2009 and the league's Defensive Player of the Year in 2010 before being named the ACC Offensive Player of the Year in 2011. A consensus first-team All-America choice this past season, Wenger received the MAC Hermann Trophy, awarded annually to the top player in NCAA Division I Men's Soccer.
In addition to being selected as the No. 1 overall pick in this year's MLS Draft by the Montreal Impact, Wenger led the ACC in goals (17) and in scoring (42 points). The Lititz, Pa., native and History major also excelled in the classroom, becoming just the second Duke men's soccer player to earn CoSIDA/Capital One first-team Academic All-America honors and also receiving NSCAA Scholar All-America first-team accolades.
For his career, Wenger started all 63 games, played all but 131 minutes in that span and registered 21 goals and 13 assists for 55 points.
