Duke Trustees Hold Quarterly Meeting on Campus

The Duke University Board of Trustees continued its year-long focus on the critical issues facing higher education and academic medicine at its quarterly meetings Friday and Saturday.  The meetings were held in person for the first time since February 2020, and observed all Duke and Durham COVID health guidelines.

In the second of four planned strategic education sessions on the Duke brand and the future of higher education and academic medicine, the board focused on undergraduate, graduate and professional education and the student experience.  The first part of the session featured a panel of Duke faculty discussing undergraduate education, with particular focus on innovations in curriculum and Duke’s rich diversity of co-curricular initiatives.

This was followed by a conversation with three of Duke’s professional school deans and a concluding discussion with graduate and professional students that illustrated the range of experiences and opportunities at Duke.

In other business, the trustees:

  • Received an update on current issues in intercollegiate athletics from Vice President and Director of Athletics Nina King and her staff.
  • Received regular updates on academic, financial and operational activities.
  • Heard from the organizers of Root Causes, a School of Medicine student organization that addresses food insecurity for low-income patients with chronic diseases.
