Duke Health celebrates the life and legacy of MaryAnn Black

Warm. Giving. Caring. Compassionate. Those are just some of the adjectives used to describe State Rep. MaryAnn Black by people who knew and worked with her. Black was a career social worker in Durham, North Carolina, who served on the County Board of Commissioners, worked as the associate vice president of community relations at Duke University Health System and served in the North Carolina House of Representatives. The impact of her work ripples through the Durham community and our state in the areas of health care and education. Black died of cancer in March 2020, but her legacy lives on in the thousands of lives touched by her work.

The new WRAL Documentary “MaryAnn,” originally airing the week of Jan. 11, 2021 and available on demand, examines MaryAnn Black’s life and work and the positive impact she had on so many others. That story is told through interviews with people touched by MaryAnn’s work, people she worked with and her surviving family members. WRAL News anchor and reporter Lena Tillett hosts “MaryAnn.
