Fight Hunger with Farmers Market Special Lunch

Local non-profit to sell food to raise money in fight against poverty

Beginning this Friday through September, shoppers at the Duke Farmers Market will be able to buy a lunch that not only feeds them, but helps impoverished people around the world.

Nourish International, a Chapel Hill-based non-profit focused on alleviating poverty in underdeveloped communities, will serve $5 lunches each Friday at the Farmers Market during September. The meal includes rice, beans and cornbread and all proceeds will help Nourish provide food for people in countries throughout Africa, South America, Asia and more.

Cassandra Callas, health education specialist with LIVE FOR LIFE, Duke’s employee wellness program that organizes the market, said including the special “Hunger Lunch” options throughout September was a way to highlight a vital aspect of wellness - social health and community involvement.

“By supporting Hunger Lunch, market-goers are strengthening their ties with an organization that promotes social responsibility,” Callas said. “One simple, yet delicious meal can go a long way toward making a lasting impact on extreme poverty and community empowerment.”

Market shoppers can pick up the lunch special at the Nourish International table alongside the Bryan Research building under the covered patio.

In addition to supporting Nourish, the Duke Farmers Market also hosts several other lunch vendors, including Cosmic Cantina, Pomegranate Kitchen and Makus Empanadas.

In all, more than a dozen local farms and vendors participate in the market each week, which is on the lawn off Research Drive between the Nanaline H. Duke and Bryan Research buildings. See this map for details.

September is the final month for the market, which has run weekly on West Campus since April and will continue to do so this month. Shoppers can find a variety of fruits and vegetables, often picked that morning and brought to campus. Visitors at each market can also enter a drawing for a bag of produce and local products from farmers and vendors.
