DUKE TO HEAD REGIONAL CONSORTIUM OF INVESTIGATORS FOR BIODEFENSE San Antonio Express News, Sept. 4 -- As part of a national effort to improve preparedness for bioterrorism and infectious diseases, Duke University will lead a collaborative effort of six universities to establish a biodefense research center for the Southeast.

LOW MARKS FOR HIGH MARKS Wall Street Journal, Sept. 5 -- A new report on grade inflation from the American Council of Trustees and Alumni (ACTA) isn't alone in its focus. Duke University's Stuart Rojstaczer runs a whole Web site called gradeinflation.com, from which is taken a published chart, a composite of mean GPAs from 29 universities relative to a 1967 baseline. COLLEGES MOVE TO THWART INTERNET VIRUSES Seattle Post-Intelligencer, Sept. 5 -- Some schools managed to avoid disaster during a summer of Internet infections. Duke University filtered out 2.5 million infected e-mails, said Christopher Cramer, the school's computer security officer.
