Duke Financial Fitness Week returns May 23 to 26, when employees and their family members can learn about retirement plans, budget preparation, investment choices and other financial planning needs.

The week begins May 23 with “Cyber Monday,” a series of five online webinars covering topics such as creating a solid retirement plan and effective estate and tax planning. During the week’s in-person events, workshops will be aimed at employees in varying age generations, including workshops specifically for millennials, mid-career employees and employees nearing retirement.

“We will offer workshops that are as diverse as our workforce,” said Percy Hill III, a Duke Benefits financial analyst. “Experience has taught us that people are more engaged if they can relate to the topic or information. The goal is to have enough diverse offerings that everyone can take advantage of something.”

Here are five ways to participate in Financial Fitness Week:

Plug in from your desk

On May 23, Duke’s investment carriers will offer five online seminars during “Cyber Monday.” Among the hour-long online offerings are “How to Create a Solid Retirement Plan,” ““Equally Prepared: Financial Planning for the LGBT Community,” and “Retirement Income Strategies: Distribution Planning for Today’s Retirement.”

Learn from experts

Meet representatives from Duke’s four investment carriers, Fidelity, TIAA, VALIC and Vanguard, during an information fair 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m. in the Searle Center Lecture Hall. Individuals should save 10 to 15 percent of their annual gross income, or income before any deductions are taken, for retirement, to include an individual’s contributions and IRAs and employer contributions, according to TIAA. Employees can check if they are on track for retirement by registering during the information fair or online for free one-on-one appointments with their investment carrier.

Niche workshops just for you

In addition to financial workshops tailored for millennials, mid-career employees and near-retirees, other specific workshops are available to women and members of the LGBTQIA+ community. Check out the “Equally Prepared: Financial Planning for the LGBT Community” webinar on May 23, “Millennials: Ditch the Debt and Start Saving” workshop on May 24 and “Postcards from the Future: A Woman’s Guide to Financially Ever After” workshop on May 26.

Enroll in a retirement plan

Attend “Understanding Your Duke Retirement Plan” on May 24 to learn the ins and outs of Duke’s retirement plans, the Employees’ Retirement Plan (ERP) and the 403(b) plans.

Secure your financial legacy

Employees can receive guidance about organizing end-of-life decisions and documentation. Learn about preparing wills, estate planning, passing assets to beneficiaries and long-term care insurance.  The “Creating a Lasting Legacy: Strategies for Effective Estate and Tax Planning” webinar is May 23, “Wills (Planning for Tomorrow)” workshop is May 24, and “Is Long Term Care Insurance Right for Me?” workshop is May 25.
