University Flags Lowered on Campus to Honor Victims of Baton Rouge Police Shootings

In honor of the victims of the July 17 shootings of Baton Rouge, La., police officers, Gov. Pat McCrory has ordered all United States and North Carolina flags at state facilities to be immediately lowered to half-staff through sunset on Friday, July 22. Duke is lowering the university flag as well.

"This tragic incident involving the killing of police officers in Baton Rouge is another example of the danger our law enforcement officers face every day in communities across our nation. Ann and I are praying for the families of these fallen officers who were murdered while simply doing their job. Now more than ever it is time to show our support for those men and women in law enforcement who put their lives on the line every day to protect us," said Gov. McCrory.

While the governor's order applies only to state facilities, by tradition Duke has followed the governor's flag alerts.
