Cristine Karasek has used Duke’s free health and fitness programing to become a better runner, stretch her muscles through yoga and get into the routine of taking the stairs. She also found a helpful way to better commit to exercise.

Last year, she signed up for “Fit in 15,” a free offering through LIVE FOR LIFE, Duke’s employee wellness program, which encourages participants to find at least 15 days a month to fit in at least 30 minutes of activity. Karasek had been setting aside time four days a week to go for walks in her neighborhood, so after signing up for Fit in 15, she saw it as an excuse to start doing yoga at home every morning before work.

“Having something to focus on as soon as you get up was a special advantage to set me up for the day,” said Karasek, director of facilities services for the Duke Clinical Research Institute. “I’m a total goal oriented person, so it was nice to have a benchmark.”

The five-week program, which runs from Aug. 1 to Sept. 9, provides weekly emails with tips, motivation and new ideas for fitting in fitness. “The emails reinforced what you try to accomplish,” Karasek said.

Fit in 15 participants can track progress through an online tool and receive $50 LIVE FOR LIFE dollars for completing the program. The fake money is redeemable at the LIVE FOR LIFE store on a variety of items, from jump ropes to workout clothing and gear.

Registration is now open on the Fit in 15 website.

“Whether you’ve been exercising for 10 years or the last 10 days, Fit in 15 has some great opportunities to challenge yourself,” said Katie MacEachern, fitness program manager with LIVE FOR LIFE. “The best part is it’s about picking the right activity for you. Walking briskly, dancing or a bootcamp are all exercise minutes that count.”

Visit the Fit in 15 website for more information and to register for the program.
