Classes cover dance, music, theater, fiber arts, drawing and painting, ceramics, jewelry, calligraphy, and other topics. The Arts Council also offers photo and digital arts classes in a newly renovated digital lab. Classes will begin at the end of August and run through December.

“A lot of the feedback we get from people who take these classes, particularly ceramics classes, is that it’s a great outlet to relax,” said Lauren Tannenbaum Whittaker, the Durham Arts Council’s school director. “It’s a great way to just do something for themselves.”

Employees must use a valid Duke email address and coupon code when registering online. Visit the Duke PERQS employee discount program webpage to find the coupon code. The discount can be extended to family members.

Jacqueline Wachholz, Rubenstein Library's director of the Hartman Center for Sales, Advertising and Marketing History, receives 10 percent off when her 7-year-old daughter, Eva, attends art camp. Her daughter and the other students create art projects based on the locations and cultures of places such as Alaska and Uganda.

"The Durham Arts Council is one of her favorite camps," Wachholz said. "She brings home all sorts of art projects. ...Some of it might end up on the refrigerator and others might be posted in other parts of the house."
