Arrest Made in Attempted Dorm Break-In

Former Duke employee charged Monday morning

Duke Police arrested a former Duke employee early this morning following an attempt to enter a dorm room of an ex-girlfriend at the Keohane 4B residence hall.

Durham resident Anthony Corley, 20, a former employee at the Marketplace on East Campus, was arrested at 3:11 a.m. Monday morning after evading officers for about two hours. He was charged with attempted first-degree burglary and second-degree trespassing.

Duke Police received a call at 12:41 a.m. from a 19-year old Duke student, reported as Corley’s former girlfriend by Duke Police. She alerted police that Corley was trying to forcefully enter her room.

When officers arrived, Corley ran from the building to the wooded area surrounding West Campus’ Blue Zone Lots heading away from campus. Duke Police brought a K9 unit to assist with a search for Corley in the woods and ended their tracking at 2:07 a.m. without locating him.

At approximately 2:50 a.m., a Duke Police officer spotted Corley in an idling car on Duke University Road near Chapel Drive and Corley exited the vehicle, again fleeing into the woods. He was caught about 20 minutes later by the officer and taken to Durham County Jail, where he was set for an arraignment Monday morning.

“We are extremely grateful to the quick response and diligence of Duke Police to locate and arrest the suspect,” said Kyle Cavanaugh, vice president for Administration.

Corley was previously given a full trespass warning by Duke Police after being charged in February with misdemeanor larceny at Brodie Gym. His employment at Duke also ended in February.
