Duke Goes on Lock-Down After Police Chase

Three of four suspects were apprehended Wednesday afternoon following a police chase that led to a car crash in front of Duke Hospital. 

The fourth suspect was last seen running away from the hospital. Officials said there are no indications the suspect is still on Duke property. The suspect is described as a black male weighing about 240 pounds wearing black clothing and a black hooded sweatshirt. 

The car chase started on North Roxboro Road following a report of a shooting. The suspect's car collided with another vehicle at the intersection of Erwin Road and Fulton St. in front of Duke Hospital, which was placed on lock-down immediately. Police were able to quickly apprehend three of the four suspects and recovered a handgun from the scene.

Duke Police issued a DukeALERT notice about 2:50 p.m. Wednesday to notify the Duke community of the situation and sent several updates as circumstances changed. The all clear was issued just after 4 p.m.

“We want to thank Duke and Durham Police for their quick response and action to secure our campus and protect our patients, visitors, students and staff,” said Kyle Cavanaugh, vice president for administration.
