Advisory: Campus Traffic Impacted This Weekend and Beyond

Two construction projects and a special event scheduled

Beginning Friday, March 18, campus traffic will be impacted by construction projects and a community event.

Science Drive Closure

A stretch of Science Drive about one-third of a mile will be closed this weekend as part of continued renovations at the R. David Thomas Center.

Work crews and local vehicle traffic only will be allowed to access the southern portion of Science Drive from 7 p.m. Friday through 6 a.m. Monday. Traffic barriers will be placed on Science Drive at intersections of Thomas Center Drive and Towerview Road. Pedestrian traffic will still be allowed, but may be detoured around the main work zone outside the Fuqua School of Business. See this map for details.

The work will focus on installing new hardscape and landscaping after work on utility lines took place last month. The Thomas Center is in the midst of a $47 million renovation.

Duke community members and campus visitors will still be able to access all of Towerview Road, from Duke University Road to Erwin Road. The northern portion of Science Drive, which leads up to the Bryan Center and its parking garage, will remain open.

On Saturday, extra traffic is expected for a men's lacrosse game.

Durham CROP Hunger Walk

Beginning at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, March 20, local residents will gather in front of Duke Chapel as part of the annual CROP Hunger Walk. About 1,600 people are expected to participate in the event, which begins its route at 2:30 p.m. and travels along Campus Drive.

From Duke Chapel, walkers will walk on Campus Drive to East Campus, then north to West Club Boulevard before circling back along the same route. A map can be found here. Duke Police expect the crowd of walkers to impact vehicle traffic along Campus Drive until 4:30 to 5 p.m.

Widening Cameron Boulevard

From March 21 through the end of August, Facilities Management will oversee construction to widen Cameron Boulevard/751 by about 22 total feet near the location of Duke’s new Science Drive/Cameron Boulevard garage, across the road from the Washington Duke Inn & Golf Club.

Work will begin on southbound lanes before shifting to northbound lanes in mid-summer. Crews will leave one lane open at all times.

From March 21 through July 1, the south lanes will be widened by 10 feet in order to add a new left hand turn lane to allow for drivers to turn into the garage. Once completed, work will restart after the July 4 holiday and run until the end of August to add about 12 feet to the north lanes, creating a right hand turn lane for traffic to enter the garage.

During construction, crews will block off one lane from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Traffic will have access to two lanes outside of that timeframe.
