Duke Assessing Needs in Wake of Brussels Bombing

No faculty, staff or students currently known to be in Brussels

Duke officials have been working to identify whether any students, faculty or staff were in BrusseIs following a series of explosions that rocked the Brussels airport and subway system Tuesday morning.

"We have been in regular contact with our study abroad office, global health, and other units across Duke. At present, each of the offices and the travel registry are not indicating any members of our community are in Brussels, however, we are continuing to check all entities across Duke," said Kyle Cavanaugh, vice president for administration and Duke's emergency coordinator.

Following the attacks, Belgium raised its terror alert to its highest level. Arriving planes and trains have been diverted, and people have been directed to remain in place. Airports across Countries across Europe have also tightened security.

Faculty, staff and graduate/professional students are encouraged, but not required to complete the travel registry before traveling abroad. Officials encourage anyone who may know of a member of the Duke community in Brussels to contact Christy Parrish-Michaels, manager for Global Administrative Support, at christy.parrish@duke.edu or 919-684-2910.

Support for any Duke student, faculty or staff member abroad on a Duke program is available through the university’s travel assistance program. For more information, visit: http://www.global.duke.edu/admin/health_safety/assistance.php
