New ambassador program looks to increase bus ridership

Are you an avid bus rider who enjoys leaving the driving to someone else during a daily commute?

GoSmart, the Triangle’s alternative transportation program, is looking for riders to join the new GoAmbassador Program to share stories and help encourage others to consider new ways to get around Durham and the region. Participants get freebies and training to help provide information about transit services to friends, coworkers and those curious about trying a sustainable commute.

“We’re excited to see how this program can help boost ridership around Duke and Durham,” said Alison Carpenter, manager of Duke’s transportation demand management program. “It’s a great next step to increase reach as more students and employees are using public transit.”

As part of the GoAmbassador Program, members will receive a free, 31-day regional bus pass from GoSmart, if not already in possession of a GoPass. About 5,000 GoPasses are currently in circulation between Duke employees and students, which provides unlimited rides on GoSmart buses. The pass costs $25 annually for employees and is free for students. Additionally, Duke community members will receive an “Unpark Yourself” prize pack with a tote bag, water bottle, cell phone charger, to-go container and rain poncho.

Responsibilities of GoAmbassador members include:

  • Providing information about transit services to potential riders and assisting new and current riders use transit services.
  • Attending monthly meetings and seminars.
  • Assisting staff at public meetings and events.
  • Providing informative feedback to help improve transit services.

A 60-minute training and orientation session will be necessary to join the program, which requires one year of participation. Additional information and an application to join can be found on the GoSmart website
