Welcome to the week at Duke in 60 seconds.

A little girl named Aubrey is the first patient at Duke to receive a new spinal implant with magnetic expanding rods. The procedure will help Aubrey avoid multiple surgeries for her severe scoliosis.

A rare copy of the Emancipation Proclamation is now on display in the Rubenstein Library. The copy at Duke was produced three days after it went into effect and is one of nine from that printing.

10 years ago, Duke pledged to reach carbon neutrality by 2024. The university is on track and has reduced greenhouse gas emissions by 19 percent since 2007, using strategies like encouraging alterative transportation.

Finally, during last weekend’s sleet storm, a grandson of Zoboomafoo was born at the Duke Lemur Center. Some staff camped out at work and one walked two miles to the center to make sure that the baby and his mom were safe and healthy.
