From now until Jan. 5, Duke employees can save on one-of-a-kind performances coming to Duke and Durham.

Duke Performances is offering their annual discount for faculty and staff, providing 25 percent off ticket prices to any show in the 2015-16 schedule. Upcoming shows include a dance production from the winner of a MacArthur “Genius” grant, an Oscar-nominated orchestra and the return of a GRAMMY winner to Page Auditorium almost 50 years since her last performance.

“Artists or performances that you wouldn’t have an opportunity to see anywhere else is almost a programming category for us,” said Aaron Greenwald, executive director of Duke Performances. “It’s not going to pass through town again like what you’ll see.”

For example, on April 11, Duke welcomes two of the world’s preeminent Balkan brass bands for what Greenwald likens to a “battle of the bands.” Serbia’s Boban Markovic Orkestar, a 13-piece ensemble, will perform alongside and “against” Romania’s Fanfare Ciocarlia. Trumpets, tubas, saxophones and more will blast raucous, up-tempo music throughout Page Auditorium.

Other highlights include:

  • Abraham.In.Motion, the company of director and choreographer Kyle Abraham, a classical cellist, visual artist and choreographer of contemporary dance. The recipient of a MacArthur “Genius” grant, Abraham’s production examines civil rights in America and South Africa. Feb. 19 and 20.
  • A 10th anniversary showing of The Triplets of Belleville featuring a live musical performance by the Oscar-nominated, nine-piece Le Terrible Orchestre de Belleville. In 2004, the film was nominated for Best Animated Feature as well as Best Music, Original Song, performed by the French group. The score to the movie is a modern spin on 1930s Parisian jazz. Feb. 25.
  • Winner of a GRAMMY lifetime achievement award and GRAMMY Hall of Fame inductee, singer and political activist Joan Baez will perform folk songs in Page Auditorium, where she last played in 1968, not long before she appeared at Woodstock in 1969. Over the years, Baez has collaborated with musicians such as Steve Earle, Mary Chapin Carpenter, the Indigo Girls, and the Grateful Dead. March 20.

“These performances help make for a very rich series that adds to the cultural life of Duke and Durham in all sorts of fun ways,” Greenwald said.
